WORKING FOR YOU

As your District VI Trustee since 2017, Holly Flynn Vilaseca has prioritized getting the best K-12 education possible for every HISD student. Her 15-year education career has given her the knowledge, experience and perspective that informs her approach as Trustee. Holly has worked as a teacher, program director, client engagement manager, implementation researcher and chief relationship officer for various non-profit and corporate education companies.

AS YOUR HISD SCHOOL TRUSTEE, HOLLY:

  • led HISD’s Audit Committee to ensure the Internal Auditor has the necessary resources and support to strengthen internal systems and provide objective feedback, resulting in the Audit Department’s certification by the Institute of Internal Auditors.

  • worked with Board colleagues to lead district response to Hurricane Harvey, the COVID-19 pandemic and the February 2021 winter storm, and unanimously appoint a new superintendent in June 2021.

  • worked to bring the District Alternative Education Program in-house from a for-profit provider.

  • served on the HISD board monitoring and policy committee, developing the board's governance and oversight systems to ensure equity and excellence in all HISD schools.

  • served on HISD's Special Education ad-hoc committee, bringing together parents, teachers, principals, and special education experts and advocates to oversee reform of the district's Special Education services.

  • served as President of the district’s Public Facilities Corporation, overseeing repayment from Westside and Chavez High School construction projects.

  • supported an external review of HISD's newly adopted budget, so we can find better efficiencies to ensure the district is using taxpayer’s dollars wisely: it is vital to make smart investments so all of our students can succeed.

  • achieved Master Trustee designation from the Texas Association of School Boards.

  • supported wage increases for HISD personnel.

  • championed literacy efforts across the district such as Literacy by 3 and Literacy in the Middle; Read Houston Read and Books Between Kids.

  • worked with the City of Houston to ensure streets are safe for schools

  • ensured bond projects and needed facility improvements at District VI schools are on track.

  • advocated for parent, student, teacher and constituent concerns.

  • supported expansion of the student-led initiative getMADEkids Food Rescue Program.

  • maintained a low tax rate.

SHE WANTS TO CONTINUE:

  • to ensure all children have access to rigorous, engaging learning experiences in safe and welcoming environments.

  • to champion the importance of meeting the needs of the whole child.

  • to disrupt the school to prison pipeline through restorative justice practices and policies.

  • to create a culture of transparency and accountability starting with the Board of Education.

  • to truly provide teachers and others on the front lines with meaningful professional development and competitive wages.

Holly hopes to continue leading education in Houston as your HISD District VI Trustee. Greater achievement is possible and we still have much work to do to realize each child’s full potential.

MEET HOLLY MARIA

"As your District VI HISD School Board Member,
I want to ensure that I am able to
work for you & our children."

Holly Maria Flynn Vilaseca was elected to a four-year term representing District VI in November 2017. She has served since January 2017, when trustees unanimously appointed her to serve the previous unexpired term. Her goal is to ensure that students have access to rich, engaging, and personalized learning experiences that equip them with the skills to succeed in their chosen career after high school. Throughout her career, she has worked to close the achievement gap.

Flynn Vilaseca grew up in a working-class family in a small town in rural Ohio. She is the product of public schools there. She is the daughter of a Colombian immigrant, and is the first in her family to go to college, earning bachelor’s degrees in Latin American and Caribbean studies and in Sports Management and Communications from the University of Michigan. She has a master’s degree in Social-Organizational Psychology from Columbia University.

Holly began her education career in 2004 at HISD’s Windsor Village Elementary School, where she worked for Teach for America as a bilingual pre-kindergarten teacher. She taught bilingual and dual-language early-childhood classes for six years in traditional public and charter schools.

Holly continued her work in the education field at Battelle for Kids, K12 Inc., and as Chief Relationship Officer at thinkLaw, an organization that uses real-life legal cases to teach critical-thinking skills. Currently, Holly works as a Performance Infrastructure Business Development Executive for Johnson Controls.

Flynn Vilaseca has extensive experience in the areas of learning and development, instructional design, and coaching across diverse audiences. She has consulted with urban school districts across the United States regarding strategy, the implementation of software programming, districtwide evaluation systems, virtual and blended learning environments, and human capital development.

Flynn Vilaseca has been featured in Latino Leaders Magazine, is a Rotarian, and has served on the City of Houston Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Board for Annise Parker and Sylvester Turner. Currently, she is the Vice President of the Mexican American School Board Association and is the Southern Region Director of the National Hispanic Council for the National School Boards Association.

Holly and her family live in west Houston, where her son attends an HISD school.
